Josh Washlow spent almost every summer up on Lake Owen during the 1980s canoeing, camping, water skiing, and playing in the woods. His love for the area never waned, although his absence was prolonged. He started mountain biking in ’89 and has enjoyed participating in the evolving sport ever since. After guiding snowmobile tours out West in the early ‘90s Josh played with the guided tour concept several times over the years. Josh's background is in law and commercial real estate, but has leaned towards small business and small scale investing for the last 15 years.
He was introduced to fat biking around ’09 and immediately understood that it opened mountain biking up to all seasons and can be applied in all sorts of terrain in all sorts of conditions. "A versatile back county tool, a big fat cruiser and monster trucker are ways I described fat biking, but the bottom line was that it simply put a huge smile on my face as it does to most. Personally, my favorite part of biking is riding technical terrain, but I certainly do a ton of X-C up north." Josh and his wife bought a cabin in the Cable hills in ’12 and have watched tourism and fat bike interest increase noticeably each year since. The idea behind Up North Guided is to tap into the recent growth, compliment the silent sports and for that matter the motor sports that have worked here for years, and open up the local wilderness to people who want to participate here without a major event or without having to do it all on their own.
Accordingly, Josh is proud to offer guided silent sports tours that include fat biking, canoeing, x-c skiing, and snowshoeing. "Although I could not be more excited to operate Up North Guided in a way that adds to the area, my biggest accomplishment is helping my family grow: my immediate family includes Sally and our kids, Owen and Ann. Their love and encouragement has made all the difference."
